13:56 TheStar.comRosie DiManno: Trump takes a lesson from Putin in putting cockamamie spin on Afghan history

President Donald Trump is no longer just making history in every way once unimaginable. He’s rewriting it.
In 1979, Trump was busy finagling a zoning law variance out of New York City, allowing him to add 20 storeys to his flagship eponymous tower in downtown Manhattan. So maybe he was too preoccupied to notice the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan, president Jimmy Carter’s subsequent decision to ban U.S. athletes from participating in the Moscow Olympics, and the decade of asymmetric combat horrors which followed before the Soviets beat a demoralized retreat from the quagmire of its own Vietnam.
We know Trump doesn’t read. Neither books nor the briefing papers that come across his desk.
On Afghanistan, in particular, he appears to have taken crib notes instead from President Vladimir Putin, who — showing Trump how it’s done — has spent considerable time and energy

Most people are buried along with their spouses, their children, perhaps even the family dog. But when Pauline Chorna, Annie Hrynchak, Anna Baran and Nellie Handiak died over the span of three decades, they did not waver in their plan. The four women are exactly where they wanted to be, buried shoulder-to-shoulder under a pink granite tombstone that lists their names beneath a single word: “FRIENDS.”
Under the shade of a white oak, the unexpected inscription has become a landmark of sorts for the joggers and dog walkers who frequent Prospect Cemetery, a reason to pause and contemplate the stories buried beneath their feet.
While the women are far from Prospect’s most famous residents — the cemetery is the eternal home of the Group of Seven’s J.E.H. MacDonald, after all — they represent one of its more unusual internments and, arguably, Toronto’s most enduring friendship.

But nothing in Kosoian’s training helped her anticipate the outcome of a routine ride on an escalator, a normally banal event that left her handcuffed by police and consumed by a decade-long legal battle.
All because she didn’t hold the escalator’s handrail.
In November, the Supreme Court of Canada surprised some legal watchers by agreeing to hear her appeal. It will decide whether a police officer acted legally when he handcuffed Kosoian, searched her backpack for identification, and wrote her a $100 ticket for not holding the handrail at a subway station in the Montreal suburb of Laval.
The court will also rule on whether Kosoian’s lawsuit for damages is valid.
