Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has announced that it has thwarted a planned drone attack on a petrochemical plant in the Nizhny Novgorod Region. The operation was allegedly orchestrated by Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) and involved two Central Asian nationals.

According to an FSB statement on Thursday, the suspects were adherents of an international terrorist organization banned in Russia. They were said to be acting under the instructions of a Ukrainian handler.

The agency stated that the suspects were caught attempting to retrieve FPV (First-Person View) drones equipped with improvised explosive devices from a cache in an abandoned building. They allegedly resisted arrest and were killed by return fire.

The FSB reported recovering two drones with foreign-made explosive warheads, a Kalashnikov assault rifle, a Makarov pistol, and mobile phones containing correspondence with the Ukrainian handler, including coordinates of a weapons cache.

The agency released surveillance footage of the operation, showing the suspects’ movements before they resisted arrest and were killed.

The FSB’s investigative department for Nizhny Novgorod Region has launched criminal proceedings related to the case.

The incident follows a series of thwarted attacks attributed to Ukrainian intelligence. Last week, Russian law enforcement detained a Belarusian national residing in Russia who allegedly planned an attack on a military-related facility in Novorossiysk, home to a large Russian naval base. The suspect, in his mid-20s, admitted to acting as an agent for Ukraine’s SBU with the intent of financial gain.
