MADRID/AMSTERDAM (Worthy News) – Spain and Portugal have been hit by massive power outages, while in the Netherlands, several municipal online services were affected by a suspected Russian cyber attack, Worthy News monitored.

The Spanish grid operator Red Eléctrica said it had activated plans to restore the supply, with “all resources dedicated to solving” the disruption.

It said the Iberian peninsula, with a combined population of more than 50 million people, had been affected.

Spain’s public broadcaster, RTVE, said the outage affected several regions of the country at about 12:30 p.m. local time, leaving its newsroom, Spain’s parliament in Madrid, and metro stations across the country without power.

People in the neighborhoods that use WhatsApp social media chats in Barcelona and cities and towns on the outskirts have also reported the outage.

Calls could not be made on mobile phone networks, though some apps worked.

Unconfirmed news reports said the Lisbon subway had stopped running, and traffic lights in the city center had stopped working.

In the Netherlands, a Russian cyberattack reportedly impacted municipal websites.
