BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – Europe’s “Super Sunday” of elections was underway with a pro-Russia nationalist victory a real possibility in Romania on the same day voting was underway in Poland and Portugal.

In Romania, millions began voting in a presidential runoff that could move the European Union nation closer to Russia.

The Romanian contest pits self-pro-Russia George Simeon, viewed as far right by critics, against a centrist independent Nicușor Dan, the current mayor of Bucharest, the capital.

Official results showed that George Simion, who sees his AUR party as a “natural ally” of U.S. President Donald J. Trump’s Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, won the May 4 first round with a score of 41 percent, double that of Dan.

Recent polls have shown the gap between the two candidates closing, with Dan describing Sunday’s as a battle between “a pro-western and an anti-western Romania” forces.

In Poland, 13 contenders were vying to be the country’s next head of state in the first round of presidential elections, with the centrist mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, a senior member of Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s Civic Coalition, the frontrunner.

A win for the centrist would boost Tusk’s ability to implement his reformist agenda, which has been hampered by Polish presidents’ power to veto legislation passed by parliament. The outgoing president, Andrzej Duda, is an ally of the right-wingPiS party.

Outside Eastern Europe, fellow EU member state Portugal headed to the polls for its third snap general election in three years after the centre-right prime minister, Luís Montenegro, triggered and lost a confidence vote in parliament over questions about his family’s business activities.

Montenegro’s Democratic Alliance (AD) platform was forecast to finish first but fall short of a majority. It was due to struggle to form a government, especially if the Socialist party (PS), likely to finish second, keeps its pledge to oppose his legislative agenda.
