US President Donald Trump has said that a phone call he made with Russian President Vladimir Putin has led to Russia and Ukraine beginning ceasefire negotiations “immediately” and that Washington and Moscow have agreed to pursue large-scale trade once the war ends.

“Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a Ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War,” Trump posted on social media following his two-hour call with Russia’s leader on Monday.

Trump described their conversation as “excellent”.

“Russia wants to do largescale TRADE with the United States when this catastrophic ‘bloodbath’ is over, and I agree,” the US president added.

“There is a tremendous opportunity for Russia to create massive amounts of jobs and wealth. Its potential is UNLIMITED. Likewise, Ukraine can be a great beneficiary on Trade, in the process of rebuilding its Country.”

Trump in the post said he had briefed major European leaders, including his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron.
